Date: Saturday, April 17, 2010 | Time: 4/17/2010 04:51:00 AM
Ayumi looks so pretty! Wow, I haven't posted in ages! School sucks, I'm tired, tests are bad, and I'm on a diet. But what's interesting is... Ayumi's new album! Ayumi releases an album almost every year. So now, how does the newest album fare? Needless to say, after the duds she’s been churning out recently (Guilty, Next Level) I’m a bit skeptical as to how good a circus themed album could be. But I realized now that my fears have been unfounded. Read on for the first exclusive review of Ayumi’s “Rock ‘n’Roll Circus”! (Lyrics will be included if I can figure out the words). 2. Microphone 2/5 So how does the album begin? Well, with rockish music and lots of drums and guitar synths. Ayumi sounds mysterious, making me want to hear more. So this is a ballad? LOL, from the start it sounds like a rock song. “But I won’t lose my way anymore, won’t have regrets. We were fated to meet each other. Because the one who teaches me the meaning of being myself. And who teaches me the significance of living Is always you” Sadly, this song is not really catchy even though the lyrics are well-written. But it’s OK, Never does Ayumi start off strong. 3. Count Down 3/5 This song starts off with heavy piano keys. Then the drums came in giving us the countdown feel. Ayumi sounds monotone. Finally a semi-rock song. Well at least this sounds decent. 4. Sunset: Love is All 2/5 Her first single off this album. I’ve always liked Sunset>Sunrise anyway. But why is this after Sunset? Doesn’t make sense in chronological order. Delicate piano introduces the song to us. Ayumi sounds dreamy and angelic. Lyrics wise this song is a little similar to Sunrise, but not really. The tune is EXACTLY the same, except slower. “Come to my side more. Let me trust you more… I like the place you are at. But, sometimes, if it’s fine, my heart is a little bit feminine. Be careful how you treat me. Stop trying to be strong, your face. How come it can’t be simple… Besides that, change nothing else”. LOL, the lyrics of Sunrise makes sense more (at least I can translate better). 5. Ballad 5/5 Yes, genius, this song is a BALLAD. Next up is “Pop” and “Rock”, LOL. Funny titles aside… Ancient Japanese koto music and guitar opens this song. Wow, epic feel! It’s like the theme song of some ancient drama. Ayumi sounds ancient. “In the midst of my dream I woke up. My eyelashes are wet. I remembered the words, “Please don’t go”. Today, the sky is red. It’s as nice as you. This time it’s not a dream. I heard a shout “Don’t go!” Wow, romantic lyrics. My favourite song from this album!! 6. Last Links 3/5 This song starts with guitar riffs. It seems like a emo piece. Ayumi sounds emotional. Well, this song still counts as a ballad. But I like the powerful vocals Ayumi (rarely) exhibits. 8. Don’t Look Back 5/5 This cool song starts off with music reminiscent of ancient Egyptian music. Then the drums came. With Ayumi sounding regretful. Ayumi sounds eerily Egyptian-like in the verses. Wow, I didn’t know she had it in her! This seems to be a semi-rock song, at least in the chorus. From what I understand, the lyrics go like this: “I can’t return, I don’t return, now I have no place to go back. Been drifting around for don’t know how long, unable to return.” Haha, it might be wrong though. I love this song! 10. Lady Dynamite 4/5 So, we have Lady Gaga, and now Ayumi’s Lady Dynamite? LOL, less catchy. What’s with all the Lady Gaga imitations? Great, electronic music starts off. With a preppy feel. Ayumi sounds pouty and (tries) to be sexy. But surprise! The chorus is pretty rock though, and catchy!! HAHA, looks like I was wrong (for once). This proves that Ayumi>Lady Gaga. 11. Sexy Little Things 1/5 With a title like this, and straight away after Lady Dynamite too, can we say “Er”? The song starts off with disco like syncs and beats. Ayumi sounds dancey and preppy. She even uses the “machine voice”. Sure, this song is quite catchy but it sounds like something Lady Gaga would sing. The music sounds alien-like (literally). With a lot of sounds being repeated. Urgh, not my type. 12. Sunrise: Love is All 2/5 Ignoring the fact why this song is placed AFTER sunset, This song starts off with organ. Ayumi sings slowly, until the drums come in. She bursts into energetic chorus with relish. Lyrics: “Come to my side more. Try to believe more. For no reason I will smile, I love you. This smile bloomed… Tears shine from your face. Looking to be with you. How I meet you. I must have more confidence. Make your voice louder. Love more, I want it to reach you. Resounding from this chest.” Sorry for the weird translation ^.^ Why can’t I say this simply. Unfortunately, nothing much in terms of hooks. 13. Meaning Of Love 2/5 OK, this song has a generic/cliché/overused title but I’ll ignore this stereotype for now. Yes—it’s obviously a ballad. Ayumi sounds sad and the song is pleasant, but unmemorable. Sadly the chorus is lackluster as well. I couldn’t manage to finish this song. 14. You Were… 2/5 Another ballad. Lol, this title corresponds with her album “I Am…” Anyway, the song begins with some piano. Ayumi sounds sad again. “I loved the wrong person… In order to lean on his shoulder, I walked. My body is cold, but he is not there. Forgetting the seasons, I want nothing else. Because I love, my dreams shine. You are the last person I will think of. You are the last person I loved. Under the wide night sky, alone. What on earth shall I think of?” Deep lyrics but just a common love song after all. 15. Red Line: for TA 5/5 Well, when she doesn’t give us generic titles, she gives us weird ones. Whatever. The song starts off rocky. Luckily for us, this is a rock song. But the lyrics just blows my mind. “We turned our tears into just one prayer. The miracle we saw at the moment on that day is not an illusion. But we are lost in our daily lives, to our sadness, aren't we? If you have a feeling of despair, please remember. This day called today on which you are going to give up, Is the tomorrow on which somewhere, someone didn't want to give up. And that I'm tightly, tightly, Holding your hands " I rate this song 5 not because of the tune, but because of personal preference (: Conclusion: Where’s the circus? And for that matter, where’s the rock? 8 ballads vs 3 rock songs. But whatever, this is still the best album Ayumi ever produced. Serious, it’s that good. She totally exceeded my expectations. Go Ayumi! Her lyrics have improved (well they’re good to begin with), and the music is even more epic than ever!! This is why Ayumi is better than Lady Gaga (and prettier too). Overall rating: 36/12=3 Recommended tracks: Ballad, Don’t Look Back, Red Line: for TA Another picture for the single!! Ayumi is always beautiful!
